EAD Launches AI-Powered Waste Detection Pilot

The first pilot project in the UAE that uses artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to detect illegal waste dumping across the Emirate has been launched by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). This initiative marks the first time AI models have been integrated with satellite analysis for waste management, replacing traditional field inspections with an intelligent system that can automatically analyze data and predict potential violations.

The pilot was implemented in Al Buqairiyah, a district of Al Ain, where the system achieved an accuracy of over 90 %. It identified 150 illegal dumping sites, far more than the 43 sites found by conventional inspections.

"The project underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to sustainability and digital innovation," said Dr Shaikha Salem Al Dhaheri, Secretary General of EAD.

"The system will enhance coordination with partners, enable swift waste removal and prevent repeat violations, thereby supporting long‑term environmental protection," said Faisal Al Hammadi, Executive Director of EAD’s Environmental Quality Sector.

Following the pilot’s success, EAD plans to roll out the initiative across the Emirate via a centralized, AI‑powered monitoring platform. The technology also monitors waste types, site size changes and dumping duration, allowing faster responses and more effective cleanup operations. The project supports Abu Dhabi’s wider digital transformation agenda, including the TAM 4.0 government platform and the 2025–2027 Digital Strategy, which aims to position the emirate as the world’s first AI‑native government.
